A837

Filed under: Scotland, Highlands, Avoid, Roads

The A837 passes from some of the most amazing scenery on the West Coast to the base of the Sutherland Mountains, and right through the heart of the barren Highlands.

So you’d think you may be in for a treat with the views.

And you’d be completely wrong.

To be fair, the countryside isn’t particularly dull - it’s just that all you’ll really see is gently rolling hills more at home in Central Scotland.

That in itself wouldn’t be a particular reason for complaint by itself.

But the trouble with the A837 is that it’s a single track road.

Which means driving tens of miles with your eyes fixed firmly on watching out for speeding traffic coming your way.

Personally I found it something of a white knuckle ride - even without driving fast there were plenty of corners to leave me worried about on-coming traffic.

At least breath-taking scenery would have provided an excuse to slow-down and relax, but there just isn’t any.

All in all, if you have to drive across Scotland, be clear that there are far nicer and more pleasant places to drive than the A837. I’ll look to avoid it in future.
