A835
The A835 leads from Inverness in the heart of the Highlands to Ullapool on the Western coast of Scotland.
And it has to be said, this is probably the most scenic drive through Scotland I’ve experienced.
You start by leaving the roundabout at Tore from the A9, and drive uptowards the imposing view of Ben Wyvis, rising more than a kilometer above.
The landscape as you skirt around it is like Perthshire at it’s best - sharp rolling hills covered with natural-looking pine-forest and deciduous trees, the road carving its way through the living rock in places.
And just when you think you’ve had it good, you suddenly find yourself driving past the reservoir at Loch Glascarnoch. Even the small concrete dam by the side of the road just can’t destroy the magnificient views of the mountains around you - the glacier-streaked Tom Ban Mor on your right and Beinn Liath Bheag rising up from the glacial plain on your left.
It really is worth stopping the car for a few photos here.
This following picture was taken with a pretty ordinary digital camera, but the landscape still manages to impose spectacularly:

After that the pine forests return to stack on crags by the road, the hills and mountains of Western Scotland rising around as you drive on up Loch Broom to Ullapool.
I think it’s safe to say we’ll be driving along this road again in the future. And we’ll take more photos this time.
